Posted in Location & Attractions @ Jul 27th 2011 4:21pm - By Administrator

Discover the magnificent subaquatic realms in the Gold Coast. Be in awe by the wonderfully flourishing marine life in the area. We at Coolamon Holiday Apartments invites everyone to dive in and explore the spectacular marine ecosystem in the Gold Coast where you’ll find rare aquatic plants and animal species that are endemic in the region.

The staff at our Gold Coast holiday apartments have provided a number of remarkable dive sites that you can explore while enjoying your holiday:

Cook Island

As one of the most popular dive sites in the Gold Coast, Cook Island is an ideal diving area for both beginners and advanced divers. A mere short boat ride from our holiday apartments in Surfers Paradise, you’ll discover the unspoilt marine reserve with a rocky terrain covered in hard and soft corals. Cook Island has a depth of 10-20 metres and is also home to several aquatic creatures such as turtles, groupers, puffer fishes, blind sharks, nurse sharks, wobbegong sharks and leopard sharks.

Nine Mile Reef

Recommended for intermediate divers, this awesome dive site is also an abode to some amazing species of sharks such as the grey nurse sharks, hammerhead sharks, blind sharks, bronze whaler and leopard sharks. Nine Mile Reef has a depth of 10-30 metres and has a rocky reef terrain where you’ll find common aquatic inhabitants like turtles, manta rays and sting rays.

Palm Beach Reef

Palm Beach Reef is comparatively a large reef with rocky outcrops in some areas and with several rising nearly to the surface. The reef also has several large bommies with a variety of soft corals and sponges. Divers can catch sight of the usual Reef inhabitants such as sting rays, odd bronze whaler, hammerhead, painted wrasse, Blue wrasse, parrotfish and a array of reef fish. During summers, you’ll see Wobbegongs and leopard sharks swimming through the areas.

Kirra Reef

Located just a short distance from the sparkling seashore, Kirra Reef is one of the most easily accessible dive sites in the region. The reef only has an maximum depth of 8 metres with an average visibility of 10 metres. Kirra Reef has scattered rock outcrops with patches of sands in between where you’ll see a number of stingrays and moray eels. Divers will seldom find large fishes swimming in the area, however, Porcupine fishes, wobbys and small reef fishes are a common sight.
